Sticky Rice with Sausage Recipe

Sticky Rice takes the place of traditional stuffing on Thanksgiving for many people.  I substituted dried chorizo for the  Chinese sausage.  Chorizo is a sweet and spicy sausage, similar to Chinese sausage, and is readily available in my city.

Prep: 10 minutes | Cook: 45 minutes (includes jasmine rice cook time) | Servings:  8

Sticky Rice with Chorizo


  • 2 cups sweet rice, short grain, soaked overnight
  • 1 cup jasmine rice
  • 8 ounces  Chinese sausage or dried chorizo, diced
  • 10 medium shiitake mushrooms, coarsely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons canola oil
  • 1 1/2 cups vegetable broth
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon white pepper
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 4 stalks green onions, chopped, green parts only
  • 8 stalks green onions for garnish


**  Soak your sweet rice.  Cover with 2 inches of water and soak overnight.

  1. Cook jasmine rice according to directions.
  2. Drain sweet  rice.
  3. Heat  wok or skillet over medium high heat.  Saute chorizo for 5 minutes.
  4. Add mushrooms and saute for 5 minutes.
  5. Remove chorizo and mushrooms, place in a bowl and set aside.  Do not clean wok or skillet.
  6. Add canola oil to wok or skillet and heat over medium high heat.
  7. Add sweet rice and saute gently for 8 minutes, until rice becomes translucent.
  8. Add vegetable broth and saute for 15 minutes or until rice is soft.  Add jasmine rice and mix.
  9. Add chorizo and mushrooms mixture and mix.  Add soy sauce, white pepper, sugar and sesame oil and mix.  Finally, add chopped green onions and mix.

To serve:  pack sticky rice in a 1 cup measuring cup and flip over on individual serving plate.  You may need to tap measuring cup on plate to get rice out.  Cut the bulb and 1 inch of the green stalk from the green onion, then chop the remaining stalks.  Lay green onion bulb on top of sticky rice and garnish with chopped green onions.
