Special Crispy String Onions Recipe

The Extra Special Crispy String Onions recipe produces a light and delicate crust over very thin-sliced onions. Serve up a big plate of these onion strings and watch them vanish!

Prep: 1 hour and 10 minutes | Cook: 15 minutes | Servings: 6-8

Plate Onion Rings

  • 1 large yellow onion, cut into thin 1/8-inch slices or rings
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 2 teaspoons coarse ground black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • Peanut oil for frying

  1. Place the onion slices in a large bowl and cover with the buttermilk. Place in refrigerator for about 2 hours.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together flour, peppers, salt and baking soda.
  3. Heat up 2 inches of peanut oil in a large pot or cast-iron skillet to 375 F. (It is very important that the oil is at the correct temperature!) Line a large baking sheet with paper towels. Drain buttermilk from onions.
  4. Grab two handfuls of soaked onions from the bowl. Shake the onions over the bowl to remove the excess buttermilk. Dredge the onions in the flour mixture and place in hot oil to cook. Fry onions in batches — do not overfill the skillet.
  5. While onions are cooking, separate them with a fork. Continue frying until the onions are golden brown. Carefully, remove onions from skillet with a slotted spoon, shaking off excess oil before placing them on the paper towel covered baking sheet to cool. Repeat steps 4 and 5 with remaining onions.
