Jewish Stewed Red Cabbage Recipe

I love this stewed red cabbage recipe. It has a hint of sweetness and a lot of flavor. A definite crowd pleaser.

Prep: 10 minutes | Cook: 40 minutes | Servings: 6-8

Jewish Stewed Red Cabbage

  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1 red cabbage, finely chopped
  • 1 medium red onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1-2 teaspoons coarse salt
  • 1 teaspoon coarse ground black pepper
  • 1/2 cup dry red wine

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet. Add cabbage, onion, and garlic to large skillet. Cover and allow to stew for 30 minutes. Stir occasionally.
  2. In a small sauce pan, melt butter, then stir in flour. Keep stirring until flour begins to brown. In a small bowl mix water and vinegar. Stir into butter/flour mixture. Season sauce with salt, pepper, and sugar. Pour sauce over the cabbage and simmer for 10 minutes.
  3. Stir in red wine and bring just to boil. Serve hot.
