Hush Puppies with Creole Seasoning Recipe

This hush puppy recipe has a little kick to it. These taste great dipped in tartar sauce.

Prep: 10 minutes | Cook:  About 10 minutes | Yield:  About 20 hush puppies

hush puppies recipes, creole seasoning, cornmeal, buttermilk

  • 1 1/2 cups cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon creole seasoning
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 onion, grated
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 2 tablespoons bacon grease (optional)
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk, with more added so dough forms a ball
  • Vegetable or canola oil for frying

1.  In a medium bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, creole seasoning, sugar, baking powder and baking soda.

2.  Stir in the grated onion, then the eggs and bacon grease.  Stir in 1/4 cup buttermilk then slowly add additional buttermilk until you are able to form a ball with the dough.

3.  At medium-high heat, add about 2 inches of oil to a frying pan.  Working in batches, drop the dough into the oil using a rounded tablespoon to help you form a ball.  Fry until golden brown, about 2 minutes on each side.

4.  Place the cooked hush puppies on a plate lined with a paper towel.  Serve hot.
