Hungarian Green Beans with Dill Recipe

The flavor of dill, onion, sugar, and vinegar come together in a tasty cream sauce poured over tender green beans in this traditional Hungarian recipe.

Preparation: 30 minutes | Cook time: 15 minutes | Serves: 6-8

  • 1 pound green beans
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup green onion, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh dill, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons vinegar

  1. In large saucepan, cook green beans in salted boiling water for about 4-6 minutes or until tender.  Drain and set aside.
  2. In same saucepan used for green beans, melt butter.  Add onions and cook until onions are translucent.  Add dill.  Stir in flour making a roux.
  3. Gradually stir in water.  Add sugar and vinegar and continue stirring until roux thickens.  Add drained green beans.  Add a bit more water if sauce is too thick.
  4. Place green beans in serving dish and pour roux over green beans.
