Holiday Creamed Onions Recipe

The pearl onion is a tree onion and much sweeter than its bulb counterpart.

Prep: 30 minutes | Cook: 30 minutes | Serves: 8

creamy pearl onions

  • 2 pounds white pearl onions, first layer peeled
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon white pepper

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Butter a 2 1/2-quart baking dish and set aside.
  2. Put onions and 1 teaspoon of salt in saucepan over medium-high heat with enough water to cover.  Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes until onions are tender.  Drain onions and place in prepared casserole dish.
  3. Melt 3 tablespoons of butter in a heavy saucepan over medium heat.  Stir in flour, salt and pepper, and continue cooking and stirring for 1 minute.  Slowly whisk in heavy cream.  Keep stirring until fully incorporated and thick, but not boiling.  Pour sauce over onions in baking dish.
  4. Place baking dish in oven and bake for 30 minutes uncovered.
