Chapati Recipe

Chapati is an unleavened bread from Northern India and Pakistan. It is similar to a tortilla and a perfect side dish for any soup or stew.

Prep:  5 minutes | Rest: 15 minutes | Cook:  10 minutes | Yield: 10 chapati

Pakistani bread

  • 1 cup stone ground whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup water

  1. Mix flours, salt and sugar in a medium bowl.  Add oil and mix well.  Add water and knead to form a ball.   Cover bowl and let rest for 15 minutes.
  2. Knead dough once more and divide into golf ball sized balls.  Flatten each ball between your palms and roll out on a clean surface until you get a thin disc.  Add flour as needed.
  3. Heat cast iron skillet over medium heat.  Place one chapati in skillet.  Cook for 30 seconds to 1 minute until browned, flip and cook for 30 more seconds.   Remove chapati, place on plate and cover with a paper towel.  Repeat with remaining chapatti.
  4. Serve warm.

It is a great complement to Spicy Chickpea Soup.
