Braised Baby Onions in Balsamic Vinegar Recipe

Tender and delicious braised baby onions in a lemon balsamic vinegar sauce.

Prep time:  15 minutes | Cook time:  25 minutes | Serves: 6-8

Braised Baby Onions in Basalmic Vinegar

  • 2 pounds baby (pearl) onions
  • 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil (in all)
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon crushed oregano
  • 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar

  1. In large pot of boiling, salted water, blanch onions for about 15 seconds.  Using slotted spoon, transfer to large bowl of ice water to cool.  Peel onions.
  2. Heat 1/4 cup olive oil in large skillet and saute peeled onions for about 9 minutes.  Add remaining 1/2 cup olive oil, lemon juice, sugar, oregano and balsamic vinegar.   Stir while bringing mixture to boil.  Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer about 8-10 minutes, or until onions are tender when pierced with a fork.
  3. Using slotted spoon, transfer onions to medium bowl.  Continue to boil sauce in the skillet for about 3 minutes until sauce thickens.  Pour sauce over onions.
