The Basic (and best) Apple Pie Recipe

This Apple Pie Recipe is full of fresh apples. It is a fairly basic-no-frills recipe which is simply delicious! It is my favorite apple pie.

Prep: 20 minutes | Cook: 1 hour | Serves: 8

apples, cinnamon, pie crust, recipes

Ingredients

  • Pie pastry for 9-inch two-crust pie
  • 1 teaspoon flour
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 8 cups (about 3 pounds) of cooking apples, cored, peeled and thinly sliced (my favorites are Jonathan, Winesap or Rome)
  • 3-4 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.  Prepare pie pastry for 9-inch two-crust pie.  Roll out half of pastry and line pie plate.  Carefully trim edges.  Sprinkle 1 teaspoon of flour in the bottom of pie shell and with dry pastry brush, spread evenly over bottom.  Place pie shell in freezer while preparing filling.  Reserve other half of pastry in refrigerator.
  2. In large bowl, mix together sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt and 3 tablespoons of flour.  Add apples to bowl and mix well to coat apples.
  3. Remove pie shell from freezer and turn apples into shell.  Without pressing down on apples, spread apples around making an even mound.  Slice butter into thin pats and place over top of apples.  Wet rim of pie shell.
  4. Remove remaining half of pie pastry from refrigerator.  Roll pastry out into about a 9 1/2 to 10″ circle and with pastry cutter or sharp knife, cut strips about an inch wide.  Criss-cross strips over top of pie, sealing edges where strips meet bottom pie shell rim.
  5. In small bowl mix together 1 teaspoon of sugar and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon.  Sprinkle over top of pie.  Line rim of pie with foil strip or pie crust shield* to prevent over-browning.  Bake pie for 1 hour or until crust is golden brown.  Delicious served warm and topped with sweet whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
