Spooky Witches’ Fingers Recipe

Witches’ Fingers Cookies look a little too real and give me the creeper jeepers!
But they are so fun on a Halloween table, and quite tasty too!

Prep: 30 minutes | Chill: 1 hour | Cook: 15 minutes | Yield: 2 dozen fingers

Witches' Fingers

  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cup powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 0.5 ounce tube of green food coloring
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Red decorating gel
  • 1/4 cup blanched almond halves

  1. Preheat oven to 325° F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Cream together butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in egg, almond extract, vanilla, and green food coloring.
  3. Combine dry flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt. Blend into the creamed mixture. Divide the dough in half, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 1 hour.
  4. Take one half of the dough from the refrigerator. Break off 1 heaping teaspoonful and roll it into a finger shape. Don’t forget to form the knuckle. Then, using a butter knife, make indents in several places (knuckle/joints) to resemble a finger and make a small indent at the tip of the finger for the fingernail. Repeat with rest of dough.
  5. Place cookies on prepared baking sheets and bake for 15 minutes until edges lightly browned. Let cookies cool on parchment-lined baking sheets for 10 minutes. Squeeze red decorating gel into the indents made for the fingernail and gently press an almond on top so the gel oozes out from underneath. (Yucky!) Allow cookies to cool completely on parchment-lined baking sheets.
