Chocolate Candy Caramel Apple Recipe

These decadent caramel apples are covered with chocolate candies and pretzels, then drizzled with chocolate.

Prep time: 10 minutes | Cook time: 20 minutes | Servings:  6

Caramel Apples with pretzels and chocolate

Ingredients:

  • 6 Apples
  • 6 Popsicle sticks
  • 1 14oz package of caramels
  • 2 tablespoons of water
  • Toppings. I used pretzels, Reese’s peanut butter cups and Hersheys coconut candy kisses, chopped into small pieces.

Chocolate drizzle

  • 2 cups of Rolos chocolate candies
  • 2 tablespoons of shortening

Instructions:

  1. Spray wax paper with cooking spray and set aside.
  2. Using a spatula or slotted spoon, place each apple in boiling water for 5 seconds.  Wipe with a dry towel to remove any wax and dry completely.  Place in the freezer.
  3. Melt the caramels in a double broiler with the water.
  4. Place the popsicle stick into the top of the apple and roll in the melted caramel.  Spoon the caramel over the apple to be sure it gets covered.
  5. Scrape the excess caramel off the bottom of the apple with a spoon and place on waxed paper.  Place in the refrigerator for a couple of minutes to let the caramel harden slightly.
  6. Roll the caramel apples in the candy or pretzel coating.  You may have to press the candy into the caramel.  Place on the waxed paper and let the caramel harden in the refrigerator.
  7. Melt the Rolos and shortening in a double broiler.  Using a spoon, drizzle the melted chocolate over the apples.  Place in the refrigerator.
