NYC Crab Patties Recipe



New York City’s ’21’ Club is the city’s oldest restaurant in operation on 21 West 52nd Street since late New Year’s Eve 1929. Several of the ’21’ Club’s renown recipes date back the eatery’s earliest days.

Prep: 15 minutes | Chill: 1 hour and 20 minutes, or longer | Cook: 30 minutes | Serves: 4

Crab Patties}

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 red bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 yellow bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 jalapeno, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 1/2 cups dried bread crumbs
  • 1 pound of lump crab meat (if using canned crab meat drain off liquid)
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons seafood seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon coarse ground black pepper, or to taste
  • salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat vegetable oil in a medium skillet. Add diced red and yellow bell pepper and saute until soft about 5 minutes. Add jalapeno and garlic and saute for 1 minutes. Allow to cool about 15 minutes.
  2. Transfer the peppers/garlic mixture to a bowl and add 2 tablespoons of the bread crumbs, crab meat, parsley, mayonnaise, seafood seasoning, pepper, and salt. Chill for 20 minutes.
  3. Scoop about 1/4 cup of the crab mixture into 8 portions. Form 3/4-inch thick patties. Spread remaining bread crumbs out on a sheet of wax paper and gently press each side of each patty into the bread crumbs to coat evenly. Cover crab patties loosely and chill for at least 1 hour and up to 1 day.
  4. Preheat oven to 375ºF.
  5. In a large heavy skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of oil over medium-high heat. Saute 4 crab patties until golden brown, 3-5 minutes on each side. Transfer crab patties to baking sheet. Heat another tablespoon of oil in skillet and saute remaining 4 patties until golden brown. Place on baking sheet.
  6. Serve with mayonnaise.
