Grilled Brats with Beer Sauce and Beer Drinking Recipe

I have definitely been missing out, having never eaten bratwurst before! Bratwurst is a German sausage made of either pork, sausage or veal.

Prep time: 15 minutes | Cook time: 35 minutes | Serves: 8-10

Bratwurst, sausage

Ingredients

  • 10 bratwurst sausage links, uncooked
  • 2 12-ounce bottles of Old Milwaukee beer + beer to drink while grilling
  • 2 large white onion, cut into slices
  • 10 bratwurst buns
  • brown mustard

Red Dog Beer Sauce

  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 2 14.5 ounce cans of whole tomatoes
  • 1 12-ounce bottles of beer
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of worcheshire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon coarse ground pepper

Instructions

  1. Fire up the pit.  While waiting for coals to be ready, put 2 beers in medium sized saucepan.  Add sliced onions and the bratwurst.  Bring beer to a simmer.  Don’t allow beer to heat above simmer.  Simmer bratwurst for 20 minutes.  Remove bratwurst from pot and when coals are ready place bratwurst on grill.  Discard beer/onion mixture.  Grill bratwurst for about 15 minutes until golden brown all over.  Do not overcook.
  2. While bratwurst is grilling prepare Red Dog Beer Sauce.  Add all ingredients to large heavy sauce pan.  Bring to simmer.  Place grilled bratwurst in Red Dog Beer sauce until ready to serve.
  3. Serve bratwurst on buns with brown mustard and Red Dog Beer Sauce.
