Burning Book Cake Recipe
For those of you who haven’t read Fahrenheit 451, the main character is a fireman, but instead of putting out fires, he starts them. All the fireman do and what they really love to burn is books. This book-shaped cake is decorated with flames made with melted hard candies. I used some of the suggestions from Annie’s post about how to jazz up a cake mix to make this inferno cake. I added instant white chocolate pudding mix and extra eggs to store-bought yellow cake and the results were surprisingly good.
Inspired by Fahrenheit 451
Prep: 10 minutes Cook time: 28-33 minutes Serves: 20

Ingredients
- 2 store-bought cake mixes
- 2 three ounce boxes instant pudding
- 2 cups water
- 1 cup vegetable oil
- 8 eggs
- Black icing
- For the flames: about 20 each of butterscotch and red (ie cinnamon) hard candies
- Pull and peel Twizzler for the bookmark
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 °F for shiny metal or glass pan or 325 °F for a dark or nonstick pan. Grease the bottom only of two 13 x 9 baking dishes.
- Beat all the ingredients together in a large bowl on low speed for 30 seconds, then on medium 2 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally. Divide evenly between the two prepared pans.
- Bake for 28-33 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes before removing from the pan.
- Flames: Lay out several sheets of aluminum foil. Using two saucepans, place the butterscotch candies in one and the red candies in the other. Heat over medium heat until they are melted, stirring frequently. Using a spoon, drizzle the melted candy in a flame shape, first using one color and then the other. Let cool.
- Place the cakes side by side and ice with your favorite icing. Use black icing to make writing. Decorate with the flames and use the Twizzler to make a bookmark.

marks along the side of the cake. |
