Anjero (Traditional Somali Pancake) Recipe

June 28, 2016 | by Lisa | sweets

I am not sure of the exact name of the traditional somali pancake as I have seen it spelled many ways: anjara, anjero and lahooh. In Infidel, it was called angello and rolled with butter and sugar. The original recipe makes 4 pancakes but I made them thinner by using less batter per pancake so I could roll them easier.

Easy Battenberg Cake Recipe

| by Marilyn | sweets

This British cake is traditionally made with yellow and pink sponge cake arranged in a checkerboard pattern and covered with marzipan. In The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, Christopher does not like the color yellow, so I used food coloring to make the sponge cakes pink and green.
I wanted to make this cake semi-homemade so I used packaged cake and marzipan in a tube. While sponge cake is similar to angel food cake, sponge cake is made with whole egg and the angel food cake is made with egg whites only.

New England Hasty Pudding Recipe

June 27, 2016 | by Annie | sweets

Have you ever wondered about hasty pudding? Of course, most of us have heard of Harvard’s Hasty Pudding Club, but what is hasty pudding and what does is have to do with Harvard? The answer to the first question is that hasty pudding is actually derived from traditional English recipes. Early colonials learned to adapt their food preparation to available ingredients, one of which was the Native American’s cornmeal. Hasty pudding is one of those such early American foods.

Black Rum Spice Cake Recipe

| by Annie | sweets

My Black Rum Spice Cake recipe is similar to a Caribbean black cake, which is loaded with rum and a variety of dried fruits. I cut back on the rum, it still has quite a bit, and used only prunes. This moist and delicious cake is topped with a black rum glaze.

Scary Snowman Cake Recipe

| by Lisa | sweets

If you were looking for a cheery snowman cake, this one isn’t it. In Jo Nesbo’s The Snowman, the lovable frosty snowman takes on an eery quality. I used this quote as inspiration for the cake decorations: “the grin was not formed by the mouth, which was sewn up with coarse hemplike thread zigzagging in and out of the lips. The grin traversed the chin and arced up to the cheeks and was drawn with a line of black nails that could have only been hammered in.”

Mississippi Mud Cake Recipe

| by Annie | sweets

My mom has been making this recipe for as long as I can remember. This Mississippi Mud Cake is for people who like their sweets sweet (like me, but it was too sweet for my husband). It is basically a pecan brownie topped with marshmallow creme and chocolate pecan icing. It is best to make it a few hours ahead of time so it has time to set, otherwise it will be difficult to cut.
