Boston Cream Pie Recipe

August 22, 2016 | by Annie | sweets

Boston Cream Pie is actually a thin sponge cake cut into two layers, filled with vanilla custard and topped with a simple chocolate ganache or glaze. This cake started out as an early American dessert called “pudding-cake-pie.” Then in the 1850’s, a chef at the Parker House Hotel (now known as the Omni Hotel) in Boston added a chocolate icing to the dessert and rechristened it to Boston Cream Pie.

Steamed pudding is more like a dense ultra moist cake, rather than the creamy pudding most Americans are accustomed to. This wonderful recipe is simple and meant to be served straight from the oven. Top each serving with cream or a favorite vanilla or rum sauce.

Molasses Pecan Stack Cake Recipe

| by Annie | sweets

Social gatherings in Appalachia oftentimes included stack cake. Each family would bring a single layer of cake. The layers would be stacked one atop the others to form a single multi-layered cake of different flavors. If the gathering was a large one, several stack cakes would be assembled. This cake recipe makes a single layer for a stack cake or can be enjoyed as a single-layer cake. It is made with molasses and spices and topped with a brown sugar pecan glaze. Either way it’s a treat!

My mother and I made this recipe often when I was a kid. She didn’t have The Waldorf=Astoria Cookbook, but found this recipe in a little 1960’s paperback cookbook. Don’t be turned off by the inclusion of beets. I guarantee you can’t taste them. This chocolate cake is rich and moist and a lovely deep brown/red color.

Peanut Butter Cookies with Heat Recipe

| by Lisa | sweets

I picked up these delicious peanut butter cookies at a bake sale yesterday. They start out like your typical peanut butter cookie, moist and nutty, with just a hint of curious spice but then finish with a heated kick that lingers for some time afterwards. I was so impressed, I had to hunt down the baker to get the recipe. .Luckily each baked item was tagged so it didn’t take long to find Anna over at Cookie Madness. She was kind enough to let me share the recipe with you.
