Tina Cocolina Queen of the Cupcakes

Tina Cocolina by Pablo Cartaya and Martin Howard is about a cupcake girl trying to find her topping so she can enter the Cream of the Top Cupcake contest.  The book includes cupcake and icing recipes by award-winning pastry chef Martin Howard.

This book provides inspiration for a fun book themed birthday party or a school event.  Have cupcakes ready to be decorated and provide lots of candy, icing, chocolate and anything else you can think of to provide lots of inspiration for little ones trying to find their very own topping.

I read this book with my boys who, despite the pink cover, loved it.  We each had fun trying to come up with “our” topping.   We decided to try the Southern Red Velvet  Cupcake (ours was actually Red, Green and Blue Velvet).  This is an especially fun recipe for kids because baking soda and vinegar are added to the batter, causing lots of fizzing and bubbling.

Here are our toppings:

  • Mine:   peanut butter chip, peanut M&M and chocolate sauce
  • Husband’s:  chocolate chip, whopper
  • 6 year old’s:  marshmallow, sweet tart
  • Although my 3 year old decided his topping was going to be marshmallow, Kit Kat, strawberry, when decorating time came he changed his mind and just wanted to make a scary face with mints and candy corn.   That’s our little renegade…always doing his own thing.
