The Moses Expedition by Juan Gómez-Jurado

The Moses Expedition by Juan Gómez-Jurado is an action-packed thriller loaded with intrigue, retribution and fanaticism, as a secret is uncovered that points to the location of The Ark of the Covenant. Father Fowler, a CIA operative and Catholic priest, is a fascinating character and he alone makes this novel worth the read!

From the Publisher

After fifty years in hiding, the Nazi war criminal known as the Butcher of Spiegelgrund has finally been tracked down by Father Anthony Fowler, a CIA operative and a member of the Vatican’s secret service. He wants something from the Butcher—a candle covered in filigree gold that was stolen from a Jewish family many years before.

But it isn’t the gold Fowler is after. As Fowler holds a flame to the wax, the missing fragment of an ancient map that uncovers the location of the Ten Commandments given to Moses is revealed. Soon Fowler is involved in an expedition to Jordan set up by a reclusive billionaire. But there is a traitor in the group who has ties to terrorist organizations back in the United States, and who is patiently awaiting the moment to strike.

From wartime Vienna to terrorist cells in New York and a lost valley in Jordan, The Moses Expedition is a thrilling read about a quest for power and the secrets of an ancient world.

Book Club Party Ideas for The Moses Expedition

Learning a bit about the country of Jordan while reading The Moses Expedition and working on this post has been enjoyable.  Your decorations can include a map of Jordan (I found this image on-line) and items featuring renditions of the Art of the Covenant.

I have long admired the biblical illustrations of J. James Tissot, and have included The Ark Crossing Over the Jordan. It is such a nice rendering of the biblical scene in which the Jordan River parts and the the sacred Ark is carried across during the Israelites’ Exodus from Egypt.

Did you know that the design for the Ark of the Covenant in the Indiana Jones movies came from Tissot’s illustrations? The image above is a vibrant colorized version of Tissot’s original illustration, and below is how the illustration appears in my 50 year old bible.

A statue of The Ark of the Covenant, also based on Tissot’s illustrations, adds a nice touch.

Music can include traditional Bedouin songs as found in Jordan: Bedouin Songs, Wedding Songs, Fishermen’s Songs from Aqaba.

Book Club Menu for The Moses Expedition

The obvious meal choice for your book club party is Mansaf, considered a national treasure in Jordan. Mansaf is a traditional Bedouin dish. The Bedouins are the predominate ethnic group in Jordan. Bedouin, in Arabic, the Bedu, translates to “desert dwellers”. Mansaf is served over khubz and rice.

Creamy kanafeh is a truly wonderful dessert. Serve with a strong Middle Eastern coffee.

Jordan’s climate is hot and dry. Chilled limonada with mint is a very popular refreshment.

FYI: Jordan is a Muslim country, so alcohol is not openly consumed, but Jordan does have a reputation for producing high quality wines.
