Counting Calories The Easy Way

Since I have been training for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon, a friend of mine suggested I visit http://caloriecount.about.com/ to help me keep up with how many calories I am taking in versus how many calories I am burning.

Each day I fill in a food and an activity log and then I can see how many calories I consumed and how many I burned for that day.  This site has lots of options for foods and activities, so I am able to be specific when filling in my logs.  It also gives me a nutrient report to let me know what nutrients/vitamins I am getting too much or not enough of (I found this section very enlightening).   Now that I am learning how many calories are in certain foods and how much activity it takes to burn those calories, I find myself thinking twice about eating that piece of cake (or at least eating that second piece of cake).

  1. I’m certainly not planning on any marathons…wow…makes my knees hurt just to think about it!! But, as I’ve gotten older I’ve noticed my stomach does not respond the same to certain foods. I’ve tried to be more cognizant of what I eat and what I prepare for my family. Before I put cheetos in my mouth I try to think about whether or not the taste is worth the calories, fat, salt, preservatives, etc….sometimes the answer is yes, but a lot of times the answer is no. I’ve signed up for this and am looking forward to seeing the analysis of my daily intake of food. Thanks!

  2. I hear you, Patti, about the Cheetos! I remember reading this magazine article in college that said something like – the food you are about to eat will still be around next year, so you can enjoy it then. To this day, whenever I am looking at that Snickers bar in the grocery store, trying to decide if I should place it on the belt along with my fruits and veggies, I say to myself “I can enjoy one sometime in the future” and put it back. It usually ends up being the near future but at least I didn’t eat it that day!

I am so glad you signed up for Calorie Count. I was floored at the end of my first day to see my nutrient report. I only had two fall in the green range, all the others were too low or too high. Yikes!! I hope you find this site useful and I hope this site finds you in the green range!

  3. My church ladies group is implementing a book called Fit For My King. Sheri Rose Shepherd wrote a book about how God healed her from an eating disorder, helped her conquer chronic fatique, and gave her the strength and wisdom to lose over sixty pounds and keep it off. It teaches us to nourish our souls and renew our minds while learning to take care of our bodies (God’s temple). I am excited to tell them all about this as an additional tool to meet our goals to overcome “Barbie bondage” as she puts it and end the Diet Wars. Thanks
