Butter Tea (Paiyu Cha) Recipe

Butter tea (paiyu cha) is a staple of the Balti diet. This tea will make your lips feel so supple and soft. An remember, “the third time you share a cup of tea, you become family”.

The first time you share tea with a Balti, you are a stranger.
The second time you take tea, you are an honored guest.
The third time you share a cup of tea, you become family.

Prep: 3 minutes | Steep: 2-4 minutes

Butter Tea


  • 8 cups water
  • 6 green tea bags
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup half and half
  • Pinch of baking soda


  1. Steep green tea bags for 2 – 4 minutes.  Remove tea bags and add salt, butter,  half and half and baking soda.  Mix well.
  2. Serve warm.
